The Synopsis for Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) 720p

The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City--a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world--they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

The Reviews for Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) 720p

A Dreadful Pokemon "Story"Reviewed byRemoteViewingVote: 3/10

Where this movie works, it works, but unfortunately, it often falls completely flat on it's face. Ryan Reynolds shines as much as he ever has, but it's really because he's playing the part the same way he would play Deadpool. And hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it, but while it's good, it's nothing you haven't seen from Reynolds before. The majority of the other actors are average to below average. The main example of a good actor is the cop that appears in the film for about five minutes before he is Captain Phasma'd out of the plot until the very end of the film in which he reappears to do absolutely nothing. The main leads clearly struggle with the script they were given (which is full of awkward dialogue and a convoluted plot which seems to forget this is a mystery film by the second act). The female lead, despite helping the protagonist at a few points, could really have been written out the plot with little impact to the story, and would have improved the best elements of the movie (namely, the growing relationship between our protagonist and Reynold's Pikachu). It really feels like she's just along for the ride at most points and the chemistry between the two leads is almost nonexistence (which could work, expect the film tries to get you to believe they have a budding romantic relationship). The quality of the CGI varies throughout the film, with most pokemon that have fur looking really high quality, while the ones that don't seem really out of place (except for MewTwo, considering his relevancy to the plot warranted a cleaner look than the background characters.). The best example I think of off the top of my head is the Machamp directing traffic early in the film. It just isn't there. It's Black Panther third act bad.

Ignoring any problems with the acting that come with casting somewhat inexperienced actors to film with a large CGI cast, the script feels like it was a first draft, and needed serious rewrites to make the plot flow better. The second the villain reveals his plan, (which is "interesting") you know the film's final twist if you have even slightly been following the plot. The film opens with the premise of amnesia, and while it's still an awful storytelling device, the film does manage it quite well, with the only real annoying element being Pikachu losing his powers due to his amnesia until the plot decides he doesn't. He never works on getting these powers back, it just happens because the plot needs it to. There are dozens of times throughout the film where the villain(s) don't kill or capture the main characters, even when they have every opportunity to do so, and no doing so directly leads to that encounter failing for them. This problem is normally something one accepts in a movie, but it happens so much throughout this film, and the villain just ignoring the characters for no reason is the cause of the film's resolution. I constantly see people try to justify the bad plot, not by defending any of the film's storytelling, but just sweeping all criticism under the rug by saying "It's a kids movie." This needs to stop. 1.) Just because it's a kids movie, doesn't mean it should be allowed to get away with blatant flaws in it's storytelling and characters. 2.) This film specifically knew it was drawing an audience in those that have played the games and watched the cartoon for years, and are now no longer children, thus making the "It's a kids movie" argument simply not true (at least on some level).

Throughout the marketing of this film, I also said it would either be really good, or a complete failure. I'll admit I was wrong, it was simply criminally below average, and a complete waste of what a live action pokemon movie could be.
